Hiking and Nature Trails

The White Mountain Nature Center sits beside the Big Springs Environmental Study Area and the Mountain Meadow Recreation Complex, creating an inviting setting for outdoor exploration.

Native Tree & Pollinator Garden

The Native Tree Garden introduces visitors to trees and plants adapted to the White Mountains, offering a closer look at the vegetation that makes this high-country environment distinctive.

The pollinator-friendly plantings also provide opportunities to observe flowering plants and the insects that visit them throughout the growing season. It's an enjoyable stop for families and budding naturalists who want to discover how native plants support a healthy ecosystem.

Big Springs Environmental Study Area

The adjacent Big Springs Environmental Study Area preserves an important natural setting for environmental education and recreation. Its approximately half-mile, self-guided interpretive trail features signs explaining local plants and wildlife. Benches provide places to pause and appreciate the surroundings.

The area is particularly appealing to visitors who want an easy outdoor walk combined with opportunities to learn about the White Mountains' natural history.

Trail Connections

The nature center's location makes it a useful starting point for exploring several nearby community recreation areas and walking routes.

  • Woodland Lake Park Trails: Explore the nearby park's walking paths around woodland and lake habitats, where visitors can enjoy scenic views and watch for local birds and other wildlife.
  • Mountain Meadow Recreation Complex: Discover additional outdoor recreation space adjacent to the nature center, with opportunities to enjoy the surrounding landscape and connect with the broader local trail network.
  • White Mountain Trail System: Use the Pinetop-Lakeside area as a base for exploring the region's wider network of nonmotorized trails, which offers additional opportunities for hiking and biking through the White Mountains.

Trail conditions and connections can vary, so check local trail information before setting out on a longer walk.

Raptor Flight Show

One of the White Mountain Nature Center's standout attractions is its raptor program, which gives visitors an up-close look at birds of prey and their remarkable abilities. Professional trainers use positive reinforcement to encourage natural behaviors, making the presentations both educational and entertaining.

Raptor Training Show

The Raptor Training Exhibition features trained animal ambassadors in a purpose-built facility behind the main nature center. During the presentation, visitors learn about the birds' abilities, their natural behaviors, and the training techniques that make these encounters possible.

Visitors can expect to see:

  • Free-flight demonstrations: Watch selected birds fly between designated areas and demonstrate their agility, speed, and control.
  • Natural behaviors: Learn how raptors use their eyesight, wings, and hunting adaptations to survive in the wild.
  • Positive-reinforcement training: Observe how trainers encourage the birds to respond to cues through rewards and consistent training.
  • Wildlife education: Hear information about the featured species, their habitats, and the importance of protecting birds and their environments.
  • Close-up encounters: Depending on the presentation, see the birds at close range as they move through the training area.

Funky

Garfunkel, affectionately known as Funky, is a Eurasian Eagle Owl and one of the nature center's best-known animal ambassadors. This impressive owl belongs to a species recognized for its large size, prominent ear tufts, and striking orange eyes.

During a visit, guests may have opportunities to:

  • See an impressive owl up close: Appreciate Funky's size, distinctive facial features, and beautiful feather patterns.
  • Learn about owl adaptations: Discover how specialized feathers help owls fly quietly and approach their surroundings with remarkable stealth.
  • Watch training demonstrations: Depending on the program, observe how Funky responds to his trainers and participates in educational activities.
  • Understand owl conservation: Learn about the role owls play in their ecosystems and why responsible wildlife education matters.

Additional Raptors

The center's animal ambassador collection includes several other birds that help visitors understand the diversity of raptors and their adaptations. The lineup and featured species can vary by show, season, and training schedule.

  • Speedy — Red-tailed Hawk: This familiar North American hawk demonstrates the powerful flight and keen observation skills that make red-tailed hawks successful hunters.
  • Astro — Aplomado Falcon: Known for its speed and agility, this falcon illustrates the specialized flight skills falcons use when pursuing prey.
  • Breeze — American Bald Eagle: This national symbol gives visitors an opportunity to learn about one of North America's most recognizable birds of prey.
  • Blossom — Turkey Vulture: Although often misunderstood, this scavenging bird plays an important role in the ecosystem by helping remove animal remains.
  • Simon — Eurasian Eagle Owl: Another member of the center's owl ambassadors, Simon provides additional opportunities to learn about the size, behavior, and adaptations of this impressive species.

The center also introduces visitors to Azul, an American Crow known for her intelligence and trained recycling demonstrations. Although crows are not raptors, her activities provide another entertaining example of bird behavior and learning.
